2020/21 School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Newsletter Welcome to the School newsletter for 2021. What a year - with so much focus on health and medicines, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences have probably never been so much in the public eye. The School is proud of how its alumni contributed so much to patient care directly and, through their scientific and advisory roles, to medicine and vaccine provision. While many positive things happened, the crisis also highlighted the need for pharmacy to find new ways to represent its value and interests. For our students it was an extraordinary year. The first MPharm class graduated in absentia following a professional registration exam held online. This class showed courage staying on placement last spring when healthcare placements across the board were cancelled. I am grateful for the support this special group received at training sites, from preceptors, PSI and APPEL. Following the first lockdown the School closed until June when the labs were reopened for researchers and MSc students. Since September we have had face-to-face teaching at least once per week for each undergraduate cohort. Our students and staff, professional and academic, showed inspiring standards of professionalism to ensure this happened in a safe way. Meanwhile, in the background, the wheels of academia continued to turn. Pharmacy and Pharmacology in Trinity was ranked 37 th in the QS Global rankings, our highest ranking to date, the only placement in pharmacy in Ireland in the top 100 and one of only a handful of top 50 rankings in any subject. This speaks to the enduring research excellence of the School and its commitment to its students. I hope you enjoy reading about this and other highlights in the following pages.
