PHARMACY HEROES PPE for St James’s Hospital being collected from the School’s labs by the Chief Technical Officer, Dr Carolina Garciarena. Dr Carolina Garciarena and Senior Technical Officer Rhona Prendergast keep vital research going in the labs during lockdown. 1st year student, Alessio Roselli worked alongside Trinity alumnus and supervising pharmacist Darragh Kelly, in Adrian Dunne Pharmacy, Whitehall, Dublin. Professor Lorraine O’Driscoll provided advisory support and was part of Trinity’s contact tracing team. “My part in the fight against COVID-19 started with rounding up anything in our research lab that was of use for SARS- Cov2 testing and PPE to be transported to the frontline in sub-Saharan Africa, where a former colleague was setting up SARS-Cov2 testing. I’ve been acting as advisor and delivering online training to help with this challenge. In Trinity, I assisted contact tracing by phoning people who tested positive. I checked how they were feeling and what underlying health conditions they may have and ensured they had details of emergency services.” Professor Carsten Ehrhardt worked in the military hospital in Berlin from March to April 2020. “I was in charge of the PPE distribution point at the hospital: masks, face shields, gloves, splash suits, disinfectants and all the other items that are in short supply and high demand. I audited the wards regarding their storage and handling of medicines and was involved in therapeutic drug monitoring. I began work at 7am each morning and when I returned home around 4 pm, I started my other life as a professor. It was intense but also very interesting and I learned a lot of new things about hospital pharmacy.” Fifth year student Marwan Al Rahbi was on placement in Allcare Pharmacy in Dublin city centre when the crisis started. “As an intern pharmacist my role is to provide care to our patients. I help in preparing daily prescriptions, manage stock in the pharmacy and communicate with patients who need their medication to be delivered. I also advise the public on the best way to prevent the spread of the virus and we have taken several measures in order to prevent cross contamination.” Fourth year student Liew Chew Foong was on placement in a busy Dublin city centre pharmacy when the pandemic started. 2
