| Paper Trails Volume 2 PRINT TECHNIQUES DOWNLOAD Cougar Paper Trails Volume Two: Get the Feeling Right explores the different paper finishes in the Cougar line and how their characteristics impact printed materials. We employed various printing and finishing techniques to enhance the book’s surfing theme. Some of these techniques are tried and true; others are being explored for the first time. Here’s a cheat sheet on the techniques we employed with a few tips and tricks to keep in mind when using. UV VARNISH A technique that lays a transparent varnish on your printed piece, that is then cured by UV light. It provides a smooth, glossy sheen to your printed materials. SPOT UV VARNISH - We’ve chosen to apply a UV varnish to specific parts of the page, which is called a spot UV varnish. This highlights select parts of the design, drawing attention and adding visual interest. - This technique is applied offline via a screen print when using uncoated paper. Any printer can do this. They simply need to work with their coating manufacturer and do testing to figure out the correct UV coating blend. SPOT GRIT TEXTURED - This technique features a grit texture that is mixed with a varnish, then cured. When applied to a printed surface, it adds an edgy, tactile element to your piece. - It is also applied with an offline screenprint. EXPLORING COLOR As we’ve explored in other blogs, color has a profound effect on emotions, perception and behaviors. In Paper Trails, we challenged ourselves to use color differently. FLUORESCENT ORANGE - With the use of retro designs and color palettes in full force this year, we chose a bright, fluorescent orange to complement the color palette of Paper Trails Volume 2. This color is achieved using two hits of PMS 0811. - We also included a flood of aqueous coating to help seal the orange, which has a reputation of sometimes being chalky.

TRI-TONE IMAGERY - Using one, two or three spot colors to print an image (instead of traditional four color) is a simple way to add visual interest. - In Paper Trails, we’ve used three spot colors on a few images. This change-up gives the piece a retro vibe, TIP-IN FOLDOUT reminiscent of old surfer magazines or posters. A tip-in is a page or pages that are printed separately from the main text of a book, then attached in post-production. - We've used an accordion fold for our tip-in, which is printed on Cougar 100 lb. Text, Super Smooth Finish. - It serves as a good way to present special information or add an interactive element to a promotion. EMBOSSING A process that creates a three-dimensional or raised effect on select areas. This is done with ink, foil, or punching and can be an extremely simple and cost-effective way of enhancing the look and texture of a piece. BLIND EMBOSS - The paper is pressed between two dies to create embossed images on the front and back. - This technique is applied offline. FRENCH FOLDS A french fold is a 4-page signature that is bound into the spine with a loose edge and no face trim, which leaves a closed face sheet. - This binding technique adds bulk to the finished book. - The pages were printed 4-color on one side, then match teal on the reverse side to add a little something extra.
