BACKGROUND WHAT IS WHOLE LIFE CARBON? Whole Life Carbon encompasses both the operational carbon of buildings from when they are in use, and the carbon impact of the manufacturing, transportation, construction, and end-of-life phases of built assets, often called embodied carbon. WLC can be broken down into a number of modules which summarise the different stages within the lifecycle of a building, as defined in the European standard EN 15978 1 (see diagram below). 1 Whole life carbon assessment for the built environment, RICS, 2017 A1-A3 PRODUCT STAGE A1 A2 A3 Building Assessement Inform A4-A5 B1-B7 CONSTRUCTION PROCESS USE STAGE A4 A5 B1 B2 B3 Raw material supply and production of building products Transport Manufacturing Transport Construction-Process Use Maintenance Repair B6 Operational En B7 Operational W 4 POLICY BRIEFING: WHOLE LIFE CARBON REPORTING AND TARGETS
