Battle on the pitch: Staff vs Student cricket clash Trinity recently resurrected its iconic Staff vs Students Cricket Match after a 20-year hiatus, rekindling excitement and camaraderie under clear skies. This event, graced by the Provost’s presence, marked a historic occasion in Trinity’s two- century cricket history. The student team, captained by David Vincent, featured a diverse line-up of academic talents, including Jack Atkinson and Harry Maltby. On the opposing side, the staff team boasted academic luminaries such as Professor Clive Lee and Nick Royle. Despite concerns over vanishing cricket grounds in Ireland, the Provost underscored the significance of sports within the college community. The match adhered to the taverner’s rules, with the Students opting to field first. Sashwat Khandehal and Nick Royle stood out with stellar performances for the staff, while Atkinson and O’Hara displayed formidable bowling skills for the students. The staff managed a respectable score of 98 runs, courtesy of contributions from Suhail and Tom. During the students’ innings, Atul and Suhail’s fiery bowling posed a challenge, although the staff struggled with fielding. As the game progressed, the students, despite a few retirements and strong performances, secured victory in the 16th over, highlighted by Brian’s crucial six. The students emerged as the victors, nurturing a sense of community within the college. Both teams eagerly anticipated future encounters and the potential for an Erasmus exchange program to elevate the competitive spirit. In summary, Trinity’s Staff vs Student Cricket Match made a triumphant return after two decades, delivering a day of thrilling cricket action while fostering unity among participants. The students emerged victorious, inaugurating a new chapter in this time-honoured rivalry.
