Dear alumni Trinity comes into its own at Christmas. The Christmas tree is in place in Front Square and the huge crowd attending the lighting ceremony earlier this month, the first in three years, enjoyed mince pies and refreshments in the Buttery. It was truly festive, despite the unseasonably warm weather. Our Carol Service in the Chapel was packed to the rafters, and watched by record numbers around the world on our livestream, and now we look forward to the Alumni Homecomings. I hope many of you will get back to campus over the holiday season. I’m delighted to bring you this issue of Trinity Today which shines a spotlight on some of the brilliant research and initiatives carried out in college, as well as some of the remarkable achievements of alumni. There is always so much ongoing research across so many disciplines that it’s impossible to keep track of everything, so I was delighted to read about Zohar Hadromi Allouche’s fascinating insights into demonology in Islam and Christianity, and Angela Griffith’s account of the pioneering Cuala Press, whose archive is held in the Trinity Library. Our alumni continue to inspire, and in this issue we feature some of their outstanding contributions to sport, literature, medicine and space. It has been wonderful seeing the campus return to life, but 2022 has been such a tough year for students. The cost of living crisis is impacting people everywhere, but students are in the front line, facing mounting rents, energy bills and food costs, on extremely limited budgets. Without the essentials for life - shelter, heat, sustenance - how can they even begin to study? And it’s not just undergraduates. Our postgraduates - fulltime researchers, who also teach - are frequently living in poverty. The Trinity community is amazing. Alumni, like you, rose to the occasion when we sought support for students during lockdown. Thank you for your generosity. Now, as winter closes in, we are asking again. Many Trinity students are currently experiencing real challenges with vital needs, such as rent, heat, lighting, food, travel, and medical costs. I am asking you, if you can, to consider a year-end gift of €250 to help us alleviate such student hardship. Support from alumni like you can make the difference between achieving a degree or not. If you can make a gift to this hugely important project, please click here to support. Thank you for always being here and answering our call. Thank you for supporting students in this time of need. Wishing you and your families a happy festive season and a wonderful New Year. And for those looking to set - and keep! - New Year’s resolutions, check out the intentions set by the Provost, the Senior Tutor and other members of our community. Warmest regards, Kate Bond Director of Advancement Trinity Development & Alumni
