New Year’s resolutions for 2023 We asked friends and colleagues in Trinity what New Year’s resolutions they are planning to make - and which ones they expect to keep! Provost Linda Doyle I’m great at making New Year resolutions, but hopeless at keeping them! Last January I read an article in The Guardian that listed 100 ways to ‘slightly improve your life without really trying.’ I tried three, and had abandoned them all after a week. Listening to classical music during a daily cold shower while memorising the names of ten trees just wasn’t doing it for me. Next time, I’m determined to make a better effort: an hour of mindfulness, journaling and stretching each morning, followed by a few laps of College Park. What could go wrong? Michelle Tanner Head of Sport and Recreation My New Year’s resolution is to Move Every Day (MED), inspired by the recent Sport Ireland ‘it’s my time’ campaign for women over 40 who feel they don’t have enough time in their day to exercise and move. Getting older is a physical challenge in itself, but moving every day is of huge benefit to our physical and mental health and can delay the aging process. The team at Trinity Sport would be delighted to offer any support to our community who wish to get some health and fitness advice. Gabi Fullam, President of Trinity’s Student’s Union My New Year’s resolution, almost every single year, is to save more. In the midst of a rising cost of living crisis and being from a working class family, this has always been a no-brainer resolution for me. But this year, my resolution is to stop feeling so guilty about spending the money that I do. I’m a human being - I don’t just need sustenance, and socialising, I deserve it. I want to find a way to balance the realities of the financial situation without being consumed with anxiety about it. Daryl Jones Professor of Modern British Literature and Culture It turns out I am a very boring person, and so I only ever make one resolution, the same one every year, for as many years as I can remember. I resolve to make the best use of the time I have. I never quite get it right, and often I get it badly wrong. This year I might resolve something new: Not to be afraid. Professor Jane Stout VP for Biodiversity & Climate Action & Jane Hackett Sustainability Manager Meeting ambition with action is our resolution! Dr Stephen Smith Senior Tutor I have several resolutions: learn another language, go to more live gigs, ensure that I meditate every day, be grateful - always. Professor Luke O’Neill My New Year’s resolution is to take up a new hobby! Not quite sure what it is yet mind you, but it’s so important to keep an eye on work/life balance so it will have to be something non-scientific. In 2017, I did a creative writing course and it was hugely beneficial - I wrote my first book, Humanology after that. Maybe I’ll take up pot holing or creative cake decorating. Who knows?!
