Actors Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams visit Trinity Patrick Dempsey has been showcasing the best of Ireland to his millions of Instagram followers this summer. Patrick and Amy Adams signed off their Irish journey with a visit to Trinity, where Patrick met with the DU Law Society, who had previously awarded him with its Praeses Elit , an award given for empowering students in their everyday lives. The stars visited Trinity ahead of filming some scenes of the Disney movie Disenchanted on campus. Work begins on the Martin Naughton E3 Learning Foundry In July, Trinity turned the sod on a project that will create 1,600 new student places in STEM subjects in the coming years to help tackle societal challenges such as climate change. Work will now begin on the Martin Naughton E3 Learning Foundry which will be built on the university’s existing historic campus. The 7,300m 2 building will enable the university to teach in new ways which encourage teamwork, design, and project-based activities and expand research activities across the Schools of Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Computer Science & Statistics. Former search and rescue pilot appointed Defence Forces chief of staff Major General Seán Clancy, BSc (1995), has been appointed as the incoming chief of staff of the Defence Forces, becoming the first Air Corps officer to hold the role. Seán is known as a driver of change and a champion for innovation who played a central role in the development of Ireland’s first Emergency Aeromedical Service, established in 2012. He co-authored the Defence Forces leadership doctrine, which was published in 2016. He subsequently led the team that developed the current vision and values-based strategy for the Defence Forces after the publication of the White Paper on defence. Pure Grit: Stories of Remarkable People Living with Physical Disability Natural Sciences graduate Lily Collison, MA (1979), has co-written a new book in which 19 people from across the globe tell their stories of living and thriving in diverse fields from sport to the arts, medicine, business and more. Among the storytellers are Irish Paralympian Patrick Flanagan and former British Ambassador to Ireland, Robin Barnett. The book shines a light on boundless possibility whatever the individual challenge. It has been described as ‘a must-read’ by the US Chief of Paralympic Sport. Physical disability first came into Lily’s life when her youngest son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy – he is now a college graduate, working in California. Lily previously wrote Spastic Diplegia–Bilateral Cerebral Palsy . Proceeds from both books go to research. Trinity scientists move closer to finding entirely renewable energy Scientists from Trinity are homing in on a recipe that would enable the future production of entirely renewable, clean energy from which water would be the only waste product. Using their expertise in chemistry, theoretical physics and artificial intelligence, the team is now fine-tuning the recipe with the belief that the seemingly impossible will one day be reality.
