FWDLOIULACRTMKCISNDHTGOOWN #3 Utterly fatigued by endlessly scrolling through Netflix? Why not curl up with a movie filmed on campus? If watching Normal People stirred up memories of your joyous student days then these films will transport you right back in time (well not quite, but they might offer a temporary escape from the strange times that we’re living through). View the spectacular dance EDUCATING RITA (1983) Walters and Caine and 1980s Trinity nostalgia – need we say more? It’s a moving comedy drama about a young hairdresser (Julie Walters) who is dissatisfied with the routine of her work and social life. Enter Dr Bryant (Michael Caine), the professor who helps Rita realise her academic potential. EK THA TIGER (2012) India’s top spy Tiger and his love Zoya battle the dark world of intelligence and espionage that forbid its soldiers from loving the enemy. Front Square was used as the backdrop for an extravagant dance sequence involving 50 actors. It is nothing short of spectacular. MICHAEL COLLINS (1996) This movie is a historical biopic and a great one to watch if you like inspiring period dramas about important moments in history, not to mention an all-star cast including Liam Neeson, Julia Roberts and Charles Dance. Several scenes were shot in the Postgraduate Reading Room as a stand-in for the National University where the Treaty debates took place. THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (1978) Set in 1855, this visually dazzling film follows a cast of crooks who plot and execute a moving train robbery in Victorian England. Edward Pierce (Sean Connery), seemingly a charismatic member of London’s high society, is secretly a master thief. You’ll have to watch the entire movie to get a glimpse of Trinity – but the final scene doesn’t disappoint!

BYZANTIUM (2012) No movie list is complete without a vampire flick. Byzantium, starring Saoirse Ronan, is a story of a mother and daughter vampire duo who move into a rundown hotel while hiding out from other vampires. Trinity comes into view when the characters take to the Old Library to conduct supernatural research! CIRCLE OF FRIENDS (1995) Three childhood friends meet again at university in Dublin. It’s a story of love and betrayal set in the 1950s. The Museum Building and Front Square come into view in the lecture scenes. Prepare to be transported back in time when watching Benny (Minnie Driver) walk across the cobblestones to meet her date. THE BLUE MAX (1966) German fighter pilot on the Western Front during World War I, Bruno Stachel (George Peppard) sets his sights on winning two things. The first is Germany’s highest medal for valour, the Blue Max and the second is Kaeti (Ursula Andress), the General’s wife. The action comes to Trinity when Stachel is ordered to the army headquarters in Berlin to boost public morale. THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES: LOVE’S SWEET SONG (2000) Young Indiana Jones and Remy Baudouin decide to join the Belgian Army. Their first stop from the US is Ireland, where they need to earn enough money for their fare to England. Indy unexpectedly falls for an Irish woman named Maggie. He hopes his guise as an American millionaire and a romantic stroll through Trinity will win her over. QUACKSER FORTUNE HAS A COUSIN IN THE BRONX (1970) A Dublin working-class family is unsuccessful at convincing their son, Quackser Fortune (Gene Wilder), to get a real job. Quackser prefers scooping up horse dung and selling it for flower gardens. After almost running him over, an American exchange student (Margot Kidder) gets to know Quackser. He hilariously sneaks into Trinity to meet her and soon falls in love. Horses are banned from Dublin and Quackser’s new love is leaving for America. SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL (1959) Despite his political apathy, Kerry O’ Shea (Don Murray) is drawn into the politics of the struggle between the IRA and the Black and Tans. O’Shea has left a textbook with his name inscribed at the scene of an ambush and becomes a wanted man who needs a passage out of Ireland. There are some beautiful shots of a 1950’s Trinity at the beginning of the movie, including one of O’Shea being distracted during a lecture by the view out the window – sound familiar?
