SCHOOL NEWS QS Subject Rankings for 2020 The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has been ranked joint 45th as a School of Pharmacy & Pharmacology in the newly published QS Subject Rankings for 2020, an acknowledgement of the School’s position at the forefront of international pharmacy research and teaching. These subject rankings are compiled based on global reputation surveys of academics and employers, and research impact indicators such as citations. The School’s strong performance is an indication of the high esteem in which our research is held on the global stage and is a testament to our dedication and endeavour. Irish Medicine Research on TG4 Associate Professor Helen Sheridan and Associate Professor Astrid Sasse Associate Professor Helen Sheridan and Associate Professor Astrid Sasse’s research on the National Folklore Collection housed in UCD in the UNESCO world heritage collection, was featured in a TV documentary series aired on TG4 in November 2019. The episode searches the collection for old Irish medical practices and cures. It was filmed in the Panoz Institute and Trinity grounds. 2019 Trinity Innovation Awards Provost, Dr Patrick Prendergast and Professor John Gilmer Head of School, Professor John Gilmer received the Campus Company Founders Award at the Trinity Innovation Awards in December 2019. Professor Gilmer founded Trinity campus company Solvotrin Therapeutics and is currently the VP of Research. New Staff Members Over the year, seven new staff members have joined the School: Dr Carolina Garciarena Dr Carolina Garciarena was appointed Chief Technical Officer. Carolina holds a Ph.D. in cardiovascular physiology from Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina. She previously held positions at Oxford University, RCSI and UCD. Dr Monica Strugaru Catherine O’Brien has taken up the Programme Manager post at the new Centre for Doctoral Training in Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies which is being led by Professor Anne Marie Healy. Sian Cregan Dr Monica Strugaru joins the School for one year. She graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași, Romania in 2011. She worked in community pharmacy and academic toxicology before joining the School initially as a project manager in Professor Lorraine O’Driscoll’s group. Sian Cregan, a PM in AMNCH/Trinity Education Centre, has taken up the Programme Manager post with Professor Lorraine O’Driscoll on the TRAIN-EV programme. Catherine O’Brien Juliette O’Connell Juliette O’Connell has joined the School to work specifically on the COMBINE project. Juliette completed her B.Sc. (Pharm) in Trinity and M.Pharm. in RCSI. She worked in community pharmacy prior to commencing her doctoral research in 2016. COMBINE is a collaborative HEA-funded project led by UCC to support the M.Pharm. programme. Helen Thornbury was appointed School Administrative Manager in September 2019. Helen has an educational background in Arts and Humanities. She was previously the Senior Administrator in Graduate Studies. Helen Thornbury Marianne Crowley Marianne Crowley was appointed as Executive Officer for the M.Sc. in Hospital Pharmacy in January 2020. Prior to this Marianne worked as a Pharmaceutical Technician in both hospital and community settings and has held previous administrative roles within the education and training sector. 2
