The strength of support for our mission in education and research would always be a cause for celebration; as things have turned out, it’s proving absolutely vital. At times of crisis, people turn to universities for research and leadership. Right now, Trinity is playing an essential role for Ireland, providing guidance and research and maintaining education through lockdown. We couldn’t do this without the support of our global community. Alumni responded immediately to our call for support for the Student Hardship Fund, with €300,000 raised in a matter of weeks. AIB donated €2.4 million to establish a research hub to help the global fight against COVID-19. It means everything that the instinct of our graduates and friends is to stay in touch through crisis and to support us to make a difference. Like so many organisations around the world, Trinity is being changed by this pandemic. It is testing our resilience, adaptiveness and creativity. In its long history, Trinity has been tested many times; we have always come through thanks to the strength of our community. The Benefactors Frieze in the Dining Hall pays eloquent testimony to this. On the first anniversary of Inspiring Generations, my thanks to colleagues across the university and to my great team in Trinity Development & Alumni. To our donors and volunteers: you are supporting Trinity on its path of excellence, which means supporting Ireland and supporting global education and research, and that’s never been more important. My warmest thanks. Your belief in us is, indeed, inspirational.
