Cancer in Ireland Ireland has the third highest rate of cancer in the world. One of every two people in Ireland in 2020 will develop cancer during their lifetime. Every three minutes in Ireland someone receives a cancer diagnosis. Every hour in Ireland someone dies. The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed diagnoses and disrupted treatments so more people will require more care in the coming years. A world-leading cancer centre is a national priority for Ireland, and Trinity St. James's Cancer Institute is leading the way. A National Project Trinity St. James’s Cancer Institute (TSJCI) is led by Ireland’s leading university, Trinity College Dublin, and Ireland’s largest public hospital, St. James’s Hospital. TSJCI is a national project that will transform cancer care in Ireland by combining world- class science with excellent patient care to pioneer new ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. TSJCI is benchmarked against the highest international standards - it has now been accredited by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and is the only Cancer Centre in Ireland admitted to the OECI fellowship of 53 of Europe’s leading cancer centres. TSJCI is aligned with the strategic priorities of the National Cancer Strategy, and the Government of Ireland has been engaged with TSJCI since the outset. The Strategic Assessment Report, which makes the case for State funding to support the construction of the new TSJCI building, and the governance framework have been approved by the Boards of Trinity and St James’s Hospital. In June 2021, the Taoiseach Mr Micheál Martin joined the Provost of Trinity College Dr Patrick Prendergast and the CEO of St. James’s Hospital Ms. Mary Day at the signing of the official Memorandum of Understanding for TSJCI and the announcement of the appointment of two world-class world-class oncologists as Directors of TSJCI. Professor Maeve Lowery and Professor John Kennedy will build on Professor Paul Browne’s work as Founding Director. This is another milestone towards the development of TSJCI as the first Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Ireland. TSJCI is being developed in two phases: • Phase 1 is scaling activity and building on existing expertise across the three key areas of Patient Care, Research and Education. • Phase 2 will see a new Cancer Institute built on St. James’s Hospital campus. The high-level design of the new building and the cost benefit analysis is currently being finalised. The Campaign for Trinity College Dublin 2
