1 Introduction Valuable communities REMA 1000 now delivers 11.9 % of the convenience goods within the Danish retail industry. By the end of 2016, we ran 284 stores and employed more than 10,000 people. So we are present and affect people’s lives at a daily basis and find it normal to engage with society through our corporate responsibility. Based on REMA 1000’s philosophy and our corporate values, we wish to be an active citizen and contributor to society under the tagline “Discount with attitude” We strive to become known as the most value- driven company in Denmark. We believe in the individual and in the importance of community. At a time, where everybody talks about Big Data, we prefer to talk about Big People. We believe that everyone is equally valuable, and we want to promote inclusion in our communities. Each year, we educate young people through our trainee and talent programs. We include people with challenges in our stores, amongst other through our KLAP program (in Danish; Creative long-term working plan). It is a shame that so many people are placed outside of the labour market, and our cooperation with these challenged people is of great benefit not only to them, but also to REMA 1000. We support communities at both national and local level. Nationally, our support consists of projects such as the Sports Camps and the Food Schools. Locally, we support our self-employed local REMA 1000 store owners. We wish to make the local REMA 1000 the assembly point of the community, and the store owners active supporters of local activities. Together with our local store owners, we currently support more than 300 local activities all over Denmark. Our battle against food waste continued in 2016, and it has become a trend among both consumers and retailers to fight food waste. We are glad, that we, together with the Stop Wasting Food Movement Denmark, have raised the issue of food waste nationally, and we wish to continue our commitment to the cause. In 2016, we carried through Project Christmas Surplus, where we limited our food waste and at the same time helped 2,500 families. The project succeeded not least due to the dedicated efforts of our 250 store owners and a crowd of volunteers. These days, more and more groceries are bought online. Consequently, local stores are shut, transportation of goods increases, while social interaction declines. As a response, we introduced our sharing economy app, Vigo, in 2016. Vigo uses existing resources, by allowing our customers to do the groceries on behalf of one another. Vigo therefore strengthens the local stores, limits the amount of transportation, and increases social interaction between people. In short, we wish to support a movement where we help one another, like we did in the old days in the small villages – now it is just powered by technology. This was just a short extract of the activities we have worked on during the past year. I hope that you will take the time to read through this CSR report. We are excited to continue the journey in 2017. Kind Regards Henrik Burkal Chief Executive Officer REMA 1000: Our corporate responsibility 2016 | Discount with attitude 3
