Better Buildings for a Better World 46 Insulated Panels Swansea Arena United Kingdom Product: Rainspan ® Products supplied by: Euroclad Group Swansea Arena in Wales forms a central element in the multi-billion- pound, city-wide regeneration programme. Located between the bustling city centre and Swansea Bay beach, the Arena is the main anchor and visual landmark of Phase 1 of the programme. It offers a range of flexible spaces capable of staging events such as concerts, theatre productions and exhibitions, with an overall capacity of 3,500. To support the delivery of the creative vision, whilst ensuring the project met the various practical and performance requirements of such a large-scale modern building, main contractor Buckingham Group specified Rainspan ® rainscreen support panels from Euroclad's Eurobond range for the central level on all of the elevations. Specified with a black Prisma finish, this provided the ideal backing wall to carry the anodized aluminium gold perforated cladding and integrated LED lighting system, whilst ensuring excellent levels of efficiency and safety. The panel solution was also specified with matching door trim and soffit flashings in black and oyster Prisma finishes. Euroclad Group were brought in during early design discussions, and the team worked closely with the facade consultant Maffeis Engineering and sub-contractor Massey Cladding Solutions during the delivery and installation stages. To help reduce the energy use of the Arena for heating and cooling, 240mm- thick Rainspan ® panels offering a U-value of just 0.18W/m 2 K were used, creating a well-insulated substrate for the facade. These were specified in 600mm width (half the size of standard modules) to allow the installers to achieve a curved effect with a flat panel. The combination of the panel’s composite design, integrating the insulation and internal and external steel liners in a single product, and its simple through- fixed joint detail, enabled the creation of a weathertight building envelope early in the construction programme.
