Jason Craig Independent Graphic Designer/Illustrator jasonthe29th.com @jasonthe29th Augusta, GA, US Q: Who are you, and what kind of work really lights you up? I’m Jason Craig, an independent designer and illustrator. I love making things you can experience, especially things you can touch or hold in your hands. Stickers, murals, publications, all things I love seeing out in the world. Q: What type of clients or projects do you usually work on? Mainly logos, illustration and murals. Most clients are regional, with a mix of local and national work. Q: What did you end up creating? A 60-page perfect-bound book highlighting my first five years as an independent designer. I landed on a 5-by-7-inch landscape format. Inside pages printed on 80 lb. text with a 110 lb. cover. Then wrapped in vellum text with black ink, sealed with a silver foil sticker. I sent out 100 copies. Q: What sparked the idea for this project? I wanted to create something that showed the full range of what I do. Not every mural client knew I designed logos, and not every design client knew I did illustration. Plus, if we don’t reach out to our clients directly, they might forget to reach out to us. Q: What was one unexpected result of this project? Looking back on five years of work reminded me how many meaningful projects shaped me as an independent designer. I didn’t want the book to just show off big-name clients but to show that I work just as hard for the mom-and- pop shops as I do for the big companies. Q: What was your cost or investment? Including printing and shipping, it was around $1,200 for 100 books. Q: What ROI have you seen directly linked to this piece? It landed me a $35,000 mural project, which led to more work.
