Poultry Facing widespread shortages The poultry sector faces widespread shortages from all countries as Bird Flu in Poland and Belgium prompts flock culls, cutting supply and driving prices higher. Newcastle disease (NDV), a highly contagious virus that affects birds, is increasing in Poland with 55 cases reported at the time of writing. This has had a knock-on effect on the Dutch market causing shortages and price increases there, due to demand moving to Holland from Poland. Higher welfare standards Many UK chicken producers are mobilising towards higher welfare standards. Chicken will still be kept indoors but will have more space with the aim to use birds with a slower genetic growth potential (longer life) and will have access to better natural lighting and perches. While this improves conditions, producer’s yield and throughputs will become significantly lower whilst increasing costs, which are being passed to buyers. Campbell Brothers are committed to working with our key partners to ensure our clients have access to the higher welfare poultry Indications also show that global feed costs (grain) have been destabilised by the US tariff implementation, and the expectation is that feed costs could increase further. Turkeys affected: Turkey supply remains very tight, and planning is key for clients towards Christmas to avoid non availability. EU or South American turkey remains the best option as very little UK turkey is on the market with available quotas being directed towards the key retailers. Current turkey costs are approx. 30% higher than last year and will continue to rise as we approach the festive period. Early planning is essential to secure volumes ahead of Christmas. In conclusion. Fresh chicken is a staple product and rising demand, coupled with restricted supply, could continue to push prices up and create volatility. www.campbellbrothers.co.uk
