Why is it important that kindergartens and parents cooperate well? Cooperation between parents and staff has a great deal of importance in relation to how the child experiences their everyday life in the kindergarten. Research shows that the better the relationship between the staff and the parents, the better the relationship between the staff and the child. What does a ‘good cooperation’ actually involve, and how can parents contribute in the daily life of the kindergarten? What do you feel is good parent- kindergarten cooperation? The parents are the most important persons in the child’s life and key cooperating partners for the kindergarten. The child looks to his/her parents’ reactions when accepting new people. When the parents and staff interact well together, the child experiences confirmation that the kindergarten is a safe and good place – cooperation that is best for the child! Parent-staff cooperation that works well is an important premise for quality in the kindergarten. 2 Cooperation between the home and kindergarten Legislation This means that the kindergarten must offer the parents the opportunity to participate and to influence. Parents must receive good information regarding the kindergarten’s educational plan. At the same time, it is important that that they take part and are engaged in the overall kindergarten programme. Good dialogue is perhaps the most important key to success. It is primarily daily contact that promotes quality for the individual child. Meet each other with mutual openness and respect. There must be room for constructive feedback. The kindergarten cannot meet all desires and needs, but must listen and provide good clarification in relation to expectations. A good cooperation between the home and the kindergarten is based on a mutual understanding that both parties have knowledge and experience that can help when working with the child. The Framework Plan states that it is the parents who hold the responsibility for the child’s upbringing. It is important to remember that even if the child has professional adults around him/her, it is still the parents themselves who know the child best and are experts on their own children.
